Basilio Bonilla Endorses Willie Reynolds for Bethlehem Mayor

When everybody in your general election electorate is a Democrat, and the Democrat who wins the primary is sure to win, it can be difficult to get information to the primary voters about who is a good Democrat and who is not. Usually the “D” next to the candidate’s name is doing all the work informing voters about what issue positions they can expect that candidate to support once in office. But when there is a “D” next to everyone’s name, there are no information shortcuts, and voters are flying blind. One way people get around the informational problems of one-party dominance is endorsements. In addition to the Democratic brand, candidates can use the brands of other better-known politicians to convey information to voters about themselves.┬áThere is a lot of information to be gleaned from the pre-primary endorsement game.

So far we’ve seen the Lehigh Valley’s two worst Democrats line up behind Bob Donchez, and now one of my favorite Bethlehem politicians is lining up behind Willie Reynolds.

From Basilio Bonilla’s Facebook page:

Those of you who know me know that I am very honest and say things the way I see them. Recently Councilman Donchez, myself, and others were appointed to the Hispanic Center of the Lehigh Valley’s Board of Directors. I believed then as I do now that Councilman Donchez joined the board for political gain and only for political gain! My belief was confirmed earlier today when I visited the Donchez for Mayor website and see that his site states “Memeber – Board of Directors – Hispanic Center of Lehigh Valley (2013 – Present).”

Back in 2011 when I was running for the school board Councilman Donchez said he would support me, but he NEVER lifted a finger to help in my race. He NEVER attended a single event I held (all of which he was invited too). I can’t even tell you the last time I see Councilman Donchez support a single latino candidate or attend an event within the latino community that did not benefit him.

On the other hand, Councilman J William Reynolds not only supported my campaign for school board, but he has took time from his own campaign to attend any/all events I held for my campaign. Numerous times Councilman Reynolds would attend events within the latino community even though it they were not always beneficial to him.

In this election I am supporting J William Reynolds because he supports ALL citizens of Bethlehem (young and old, black and white, latino and asian, wealthy and poor). Councilman Reynolds stands for a better Bethlehem! Therefore, I ask that you join with me in supporting the candidate who best represents ALL of Bethlehem rather then the candidate who supports parts of Bethlehem ONLY when it suits him (Councilman Donchez)

Don’t know Bonilla, but I can tell you I would have been much more impressed if he had left out the part about “Reynolds supported me and Donchez didn’t” – it sounds like a whiny little kid with that stuff. It may be true, but he makes himself look very weak by saying it like this.

Instead, tell me how Reynolds has supported Latinos. Supporting Bonilla and attending events doesn’t cut it. What legislation/initiatives/etc. has Reynolds done to earn the support of the Latino community?

Bethlehem politicians haven’t done much of anything to make the city more inclusive to Latino folks. Campaigning for Latino politicians is about it. So as far as it goes, campaigning counts more than not campaigning, but I would like to see some concrete proposals. A few ideas would be more Latino representation on the various government boards, authorities and committees; finding ways to lower overhead costs for low-margin businesses; and lower the cost of living for stuff like rental housing, transportation, municipal services, etc. I’m less familiar with what options people have on the school district side. The highest impact thing the school district could do on the fiscal side is fund schools with a land value tax, which would reduce the tax burden on the higher density neighborhoods where most of the Latino families live.
