LV’s Worst Democrats To Endorse Bob Donchez for Bethlehem Mayor

Interesting style contrast with Willie Reynolds’s announcement in front of his own house. Donchez will be endorsed by two other Democrats who badly need primary challengers :

Bethlehem Councilman Robert Donchez will formally announce his mayoral bid Saturday, his campaign announced today.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli and state Sen. Lisa Boscola are listed as the hosts of the event, which will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hotel Bethlehem.

The only person missing from this line-up is Joe Brennan.

(Thanks: Lynn Olanoff)

  1. I’m all for bashing politicians, but comparing Morganelli and Boscola with a wife/beating/drunk/convicted criminal Brennan is a bit of a stretch.

  2. Was a joke, but yes clearly Brennan is much worse.

  3. Donchez is a solid canditate and a real stand up guy. I think hes more than capable of running the city. Boscola and Morganelli get elected time and time again so they cant be that bad of endorsements. Im ok with Reynolds as well but Donchez is well known and respected around here and is the frontrunner now i think.

    • Donchez has been on council for 17 years. I’m sure he’s full of new ideas for the city now. I mean, sure the city has done well in his 17 years, but he was typically a “no” vote against both of the main mayors in that time.

      • Jon Geeting says:

He went along with a lot of good stuff too, but I think the point is that you’ve seen no real leadership from him. He’s a “whack-a-mole” Councilman. People complain to him about issues, and then he responds. That’s his view of a Councilman’s job. A lot of local-level elected officials think a reactive posture like that is appropriate, but I can’t stand that. A Mayor needs a vision for the future, and there’s just no telling what that is for Bob Donchez.

    • Jon Geeting says:

Man, Kelly that is setting the bar really low. There are lots of politicians “capable of running the city” or who show skill at getting elected over and over who have the wrong ideas.

      • if it aint broke dont fix it. If Donchez will continue the trend of positive growth and balanced budgets for the city on the current path were on hes got my vote.

        • Jon Geeting says:

Donchez is a completely different sort of politician than Callahan. He’s not a risk taker or interested in pushing the limits to grow the economy. If your view is “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” then you need to go with Reynolds. Reynolds is the natural choice if you want to continue in the Cunningham/Callahan tradition of young visionary leaders.

      • its an election jon. the world we live in. you have to win elections you dont govern from the sofa. i may not agree with Boscola and company but fact remains they know how to win elections.

        • Jon Geeting says:

Other politicians know how to win elections and also manage to have much better positions than Boscola or Morganelli. Bethlehem and Northampton County could easily elect more progressive politicians than the incumbents. Boscola didn’t have to defend spending $200M+ on horse racing pork at a time when education was getting slashed.

  4. Callahan is some big shoes to fill as far as im concerned. I am intersted now in who will seek city counsil seats. Donchez and Reynolds on the ballod for mayor and Belinsky starting to go senile and needing to step down we need solid people to fill these seats or a republican like simao and carroll will snake thier way into them in an off election year.

    • Jon Geeting says:

It would be a great year for some young progressives to run as a slate. All the worst people are up – DiGiacinto, Evans and Belinsky, although you’re right that will be an open seat. I would like to see Basilio Bonilla, Andrew Bench and Cathy Frankenberg run, although I know that Cathy is getting married and is very involved with the Bethlehem Food Co-op so it’s not a good time for her. The food co-op people should put up some of their other activists.

  5. Bonilla seriously? Besides playing the race card on the school board every chance he gets and being a union backed shill, what exactly has he done?

If you are going to raid the BASD school board, i think i prefer taking the president Facinetto. I dont know what exactly he is as i think he cross filed as republican/democrat, but i do like his pragmatic approach to things.

    • Jon Geeting says:

Yeah Basilio’s great. Same-sex benefits, getting a Latino on the NCC Board, advocating against cutting full-day Kindergarten and after school program cuts. What’s not to like?
