Top 10 Albums of 2011

What’s the use in having a blog if you can’t do year-end listicles? I’m going to try to remember my favorite magazine pieces for another post, but here are my favorite albums from this year, in no particular order:

1. Teebs – Collections 01
2. Thundercat – The Golden Age of Apocalypse
3. Drake – Take Care
4. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
5. The Roots – undun
6. Bon Iver – Bon Iver
7. Liturgy – Aesthethica
8. Real Estate – Days
9. Black Milk and Danny Brown – Black and Brown
10. Madlib – Medicine Show #12: Raw Medicine

This is just off the top of my head, but is there a better way to do a Top Albums listicle? I’d rather promote the gut-level picks than try to assemble a more wide-ranging list of albums that aren’t really my favorites.

Overall, another terrible year for rock music despite a few outstanding releases. New Radiohead sucked. Fleet Foxes was pretty forgettable. All my runner-ups were in the hip hop genre. If I had to pick some more I’d choose Jay-Z and Kanye, Mayer Hawthorne, Toro Y Moi, James Blake, Blu, and maybe Iceage. The balance of creative power continues to shift to Los Angeles hip hop. Despite how NYC-centric the music blogosphere is, I can’t think of any New York groups who did anything I liked this year besides that Liturgy album.
